A small reference notebook
Give a page a clear order
Begin with the task
A page is easier to arrange when its reader has a clear task. Put the information needed for that task near the beginning, then provide supporting detail where it becomes useful. This gives both a quick reader and a careful reader a route through the material.
Group by meaning
Keep related words and controls close together. Space between groups can explain a relationship without another border or decorative element. If two items look like a pair, check that they really belong together; appearance should help the reader understand the content.
Check a narrow view
Review a page in a narrow window as well as a wide one. Headings should wrap naturally, links should remain easy to choose and paragraphs should stay in a readable order. A small screen is a useful way to discover which parts of an arrangement depend on extra space.
